Girl-dominated sports in need of recognition and rewards

Oshakati-It was established a while ago that there is a great need for the sports sector to give equal sponsorship to sport codes dominated by female participants and to also promote equality among young boys and girls passionate about sports. Over the years, a notable difference in price money has been observed at tournaments and events of different sport codes - with football generally giving out higher rewards than, for example, Netball. This trend is considered to be a setback for aspiring female athletes who too want an equal share for their hard work and commitment in the sport codes they love. Recently, Oshaluwata Combined School Netball coach David Tutaleni spoke out against discrimination and said that girls need to be equally recognised. . “We must improve the way we allocate our prices. They all sweat, so they all deserve the same prices, just like other. The Metropolitan Summer Cup is giving encouragement to the ladies to participate in sports“ Tutaleni said. Tutaleni also said that he is concerned that the majority of teachers prefer helping boys only. He made a conscious choice to uplift netball in his school and region at large to ensure that the sport code is represented. “We must stop this mentality of just focusing on one sport code at school, while we have gender equality which is prevailing in our country. We are not trying to implement it, we are just focusing on male like we are still leaving in that era. My message is that we should focus on both sides, Soccer and Netball are all equal” he added. Tutaleni and many other progressive heads in sport believe that it is about time that girls get their opportunity to shine and be rewarded accordingly.
