Golden Lions pounce on Welwitschias

Windhoek-The Golden Lions rugby side from Johannesburg, South Africa found the going tough for their 45-35 win against the Welwitschias in the Supersport rugby Challenge game played at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday. The visitors led 26-21 at the change-over. The Welwitschias were looking for their first win in the second tier South African rugby competition after defeats at home against the Falcons at home and away to the Blue Bulls in Pretoria. It was the visitors who opened the score as wing Ronald Brown crossed the line in the first 10 minutes. It turned to be a one-sided affairs from there as further tries by inside centre Wayne van der Bank and a brace by scrumhalf Bradley Thain put the visitors in the driving seat with fly half Shaun Reynolds converted three of the four tries. The Welwitschias first half points arrived through tries by inside centre Darryl de la Harpe, wing Johan Tromp and fly half Pieter Steenkamp. Steenkamp also enjoyed a good afternoon with his educated boot. The Lions continued were they left off in the first half by starting the second half in the same fashion by scoring two tries through hooker Pieter Jansen. If that was not enough Reynolds also added his name to the try-scorers list to give his side a comfortable lead. With a sizeable crowd behind them, the Welwitschias kept their best for last as they scored a last minute converted through flank Leneve Damens, but it was too little too late as the visitors held on for 45-34 win in the end. “We are liking more like a Rugby team, there is more organisation whether and there is more bigger gap on the shores, so we are moving in the right direction all we need to learn to be fitter to be stronger and to be more consistence, it is just a matter of time it doesn't happen overnight but we make a recommend improvement as a first time we have a bonus to give” Phil Davis Welwitschia's coach said. The Welwitschias will host the Puma in their next home match at the Hage Geingob stadium on Saturday, the 12th of May.
