The Galz programme, which uses football to educate girls about a healthy lifestyle and HIV and Aids prevention, has grown immensely since it was implemented eight years ago. More than 18 000 young girls have formed part of the initiative, which is operational in ten Namibian regions. The NFA Girls Centre was inaugurated last year, with support from the German development agency GIZ, and has also been used to train girls in the hospitality industry. The scholarships currently about to be allocated will be awarded to motivated, energetic young women in the field of Hospitality and Tourism. Twelve spots are open to do a certificate in Restaurant Management with Silver Spoon Hospitality Academy and three for a Certificate in Tour Guiding with the Namibia Academy for Tourism. The training courses are a result of the partnership between the NFA, GIZ and German Federal ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Sport for development advisor Luise Haunit explained that it was not just about taking the course. “It's a whole programme, so they have to get ready. They have to know what they will bring to the table. They have to take part in the course and they also have to be willing to find a job later in the tourism industry,” she added. NFA secretary general Barry Rukoro commended the partnership, explaining that the NFA is constantly looking for opportunities to partner with institutions that want to use Football for the greater good of the Namibian people. 18-year-old Footballer Melissa Matheus who hails from Otavi joined the programme in 2012 and is one of the beneficiaries of this scholarship. Matheus failed grade 10 and did not complete her study, received a scholarship to study restaurant management at the Silver Spoon Hospitality Academy schools this year. She expressed her gratitude towards the NFA women's desk and its partners. ”First I did not know what to do, but this has opened doors for me and now I'm planning to go on a cruise ship if I'm done with my classes” Melissa explained. Requirements are: the candidate must be a woman between 18 year and 25 years. Be able to read and write English, previous work experience is an advantage; proven interest in either field is a distinct advantage. The closing date for application is the 18th of August.
