South Africa won the World Sevens Series

South Africa confirmed their place at the top of World Sevens rugby when they beat Scotland 15-5 in the final of the Paris leg yesterday - and clinched the World Sevens Series. The Blitzbok were deserved winners of the series, having reached the final in eight of the nine tournaments - only slipping up in Singapore. South Africa lost their first pool match to Scotland but beat Canada and Japan to qualify for the quarter-finals. They then came through a tough looking tie in the last eight, beating Samoa 12-0. Elsewhere in the quarter-finals, New Zealand beat France 14-0, England defeated the United States 26-12 and Scotland underlined their excellent form with a 24-0 beating of Olympic champions Fiji. The semi-finals brought England and Scotland together and tries from Jamie Farndale, Scott Wight and Mark Robertson gave the Scots a 19-17 win. In the other semi, New Zealand were no match for the Blitzbok, who won 26-5, helped by two tries from Rosko Specman. Scotland were aiming to follow up their win on Saturday against South Africa - but this time were on the back foot for most of the final. First-half tries from Werner Kok and Dylan Sage gave South Africa a 10-0 lead at the break. Wight touched down to haul the Scots back into the match but a length of the field score, rounded off by South Africa skipper Philip Snyman sealed a 15-5 win - and with it the series for his side. New Zealand claimed the bronze medal after beating England 12-5.
