Special Olympics Namibia has a new board.

The eight-member committee which, will be led by Cliff Olivier, will among other tasks be responsible for amending the outdated constitution, recruiting athletes in all 14 regions and preparing these athletes for international competitions. Confirming the appointment of the new committee, was the Chief Administrator of the National Sports Commission, Freddie Mwiya. He could, however, not comment further as he was out of town on official business. The terms of office for the new board are not yet known, but according to the old constitution they are to serve for nine years. Special Olympics Namibia’s license was revoked last year by Special Olympics International following an alleged mismanagement of funds by the former board. Since then, all activities of the programme were put on hold and athletes were left without any explanation. As a consequence, the Football for Hope Centre in Katutura was also closed. The former board members are yet to be cleared, as some took the legal route to challenge the decision, claiming that they were dismissed without any hearing up to date. Whether the appointment of the current members is legitimate still needs to be confirmed, because in terms of the constitution, board members are to be elected at an AGM and not appointed as seems to be the case with the new board. NBC Sports desk has it on record that the new board members were only screened and no election took place. The first board meeting took place this weekend, with the official announcement of the board still to take place in the due course.
