By Wesley Vries The University of Namibia sports teams are fast becoming dominant forces on the local sport scene. Six-years ago when Unam started to participate in various domestic leagues, its teams sat at the bottom of the hockey, netball, rugby and volleyball tables. Since teachers' colleges merged with Unam, its teams have been dominating the local sport scene and fed the national teams with players in all sport codes. The best performing team is the University's rugby team that has won the Premiership for the past three years in a row. It went unbeaten in 31-games covering a two-year period. Twelve players from the team have represented Namibia in the Currie Cup, and five played in test matches against Uruguay. Also dominating the Basketball scene were Unam Wolves who scooped the Khomas Basketball Association League, KBA Cup and the Independence Cup beating off competition from Blue Devils, Titans and Lions in the process. The Netball team has also been on an unbeaten run of 14 matches this year while they came second in 2016. The team has also seen 6 players capped for the U21 Team and another 9 players made it to the TISAN Team while 8 players played for the Senior National Team. The Hockey teams did not disappoint either with the UNAM Women Indoor and Outdoor Team winning the League while the Men’s Team also got on the winning side by taking top honors. Unam's Senior Sport Officer, Werner Jeffery says hard work has gone into all sport codes structure, hence their domination.
