The Welwitschias, who had a tough start to the SuperSport Rugby Challenge campaign, finally got their breakthrough when they beat the Falcons on Saturday afternoon at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek. The boys from Gauteng made the first move in the first minute of the game, securing a 5 point lead. The Namibian team got their break three minutes later through speedy winger Gino Wilson with a successful conversion coming from fly half, Theuns Kotzé. This gave the Welwitschias a slight lead with 7 points to 5. Wilson, however, was not done and scored his second try in the 7th minute with the Falcons answering with three tries after fullback, David Philander, was sent to the sinbin. The boys in blue got some motivation when eighth man, Roderique Victor, scored their third try opening the gate for three more converted tries, giving them a 42-24 lead at halftime. The second half saw Kotze adding three more points to their telly through a penalty conversion. It were the Falcons, however, who had a better second half with three tries coming from two strong driving moles and winger Etienne Taljaard putting his name on the scoreboard. But this was not enough for the visitors as the Welwitschias got their first win with a final score of 45-43. Valke Captain Jean-Pierre Mostert said it was a tough game as it’s never easy to come to Namibia and play here. He further added their Namibian opponents clearly wanted the win more than they did. Welwitschias Captain Eugene Jantjies said they worked really hard to win. “Like the coach said it’s going to take a while for us to start winning. I hope the last 2/3 games we put up a good display and hope for the win” he added. The Welwitschias will be facing the Blue Bulls in Pretoria next weekend for their last away game in the SuperSport Rugby Challenge.
