President Geingob dissatisfied with SACU

President Hage Geingob is concerned about the future of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), as it appears to be at a standstill with tariffs affecting development.

Dr. Geingob pointed out that Namibia is like a beggar, something that has to be earnestly discussed.

Dr. Geingob also raised concern about the announcement of new BRICS members, which was done without formally spelling out the requirements.

SACU set to review Strategic Plan for 2022–2027

The member states of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) are set to review the implementation of the Strategic Plan for 2022–2027.

Currently, the SACU Council of Ministers is meeting in Eswatini.

The SACU Strategic Plan 2022–2027 is centred on six pillars, including industrialization, export and investment promotion, trade facilitation, and logistics.

The strategic plan also looks at the implementation and leveraging of opportunities under the Africa Continental Free Trade Area.

Namibia hopes to increase contributions to SACU

Namibia hopes to increase its contributions to the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) pool and, in return, increase its revenue share.

This follows the extension of the operating hours at the Trans-Kalahari/Mamuno Border Post in the Omaheke Region.

The extension of operating hours at the Trans-Kalahari/Mamuno Border Post stems from more than 20 decisions taken during the inaugural Botswana-Namibia Bi-National Commission meeting held last year.

African countries submit tariffs to AfCFTA Secretariat

41 African countries have now submitted their tariffs to the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat (AfCFTA) .

Namibia and four other members of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) submitted as a group and notified the AU summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

This year's summit mainly focused on garnering greater commitment to accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area.
