Parliamentarians express support for establishment of Genocide Memorial Museum

Parliamentarians from all political divides continued to express their support for a motion to establish a Genocide Memorial Museum to honour those who died at the hands of German invading forces during the 1904-08 Herero-Nama genocide.

Some MPs say that there is nothing that should stop the country from honouring those who perished during this era, while others are pained that this part of history is not taught in schools, further adding that a museum will help restore the dignity of the victims.

Members of Parliament in the National Assembly from different political parties have expressed support for the motion calling for the establishment of a Genocide Memorial Museum for the victims of the 1904–08 Herero-Nama genocide.

But some MPs had more ideas on how the motion should be enriched and treated to reflect a national identity.

MP Joseph Kauandenge calls for establishment of a Genocide Memorial Museum

NUDO Secretary General and MP Joseph Kauandenge tabled a motion calling for the establishment of a Genocide Memorial Museum to honor and remember the Ovaherero and Nama people who died during the 1904–08 war.

Motivating the motion in the National Assembly today, Kauandenge says such a museum will be important to remember and honor those who died during the extermination orders issued by German Schutztruppe Commander, General Lothar von Trotha.
