NUDO Secretary General and MP Joseph Kauandenge tabled a motion calling for the establishment of a Genocide Memorial Museum to honor and remember the Ovaherero and Nama people who died during the 1904–08 war.

Motivating the motion in the National Assembly today, Kauandenge says such a museum will be important to remember and honor those who died during the extermination orders issued by German Schutztruppe Commander, General Lothar von Trotha.

Kauandenge cited other national heroes for whom shrines and monuments are erected in their honor, and he thus feels that a museum should be put up to remember them.

The NUDO SG went on to accuse the ruling party of neglecting these fallen heroes of the Ovaherero and Nama, who died during that era.

He further accused the government of doing nothing to establish a memorial day for the 1904-08 victims.

But Deputy Prime Minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah refuted claims that the government is doing nothing to honor those who suffered during that war, stating that Shark Island has been declared a heritage site.

Some Swapo MPs urged Kauandenge not to politicize the issue as everybody is affected.
