Police in the Ohangwena Region have launched their Easter patrols across the entire jurisdiction.
These patrols aim to ensure a visible law enforcement presence in the region, particularly given the influx of visitors during the long Easter weekend.
Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa, the regional police commander for Ohangwena, notes that individuals often take advantage of the Easter Long Weekend to engage in unlawful activities.
She emphasizes that police are actively patrolling both formal and informal settlements, as well as rural areas, conducting roadblocks and ensuring compliance with the law.
"We began our patrols on the 14th and will continue until the 22nd. This period is crucial because Easter weekend sees a significant increase in travel, and we want everyone to be safe on the roads and throughout the region," she stated.
During the patrols, law enforcement officers encountered a situation where a resident from the Mbonya location attempted to stab a police officer after fleeing a roadblock.
The suspect was shot in the left leg and is currently receiving medical care at Oshakati Intermediate Hospital.
Commissioner Kashuupulwa reiterated that such attacks on police officers will not be tolerated.
"We want the police and the community to collaborate; we discourage confrontations between the community and the police. Our goal is to work together as a team."
She also highlighted that a new permanent structure established at Onhunho has significantly improved the effectiveness of the officers on duty.
"Since the introduction of this structure, we have seen increased success. Our officers are now consistently on the road, unlike before when they had to leave their posts due to weather conditions. This change has led to many more successful interventions."
