Sports fraternity remembers Rugby losses

The sports fraternity came together on Wednesday to pay their final respects to the late Reho Falcons rugby club Chairman, Etienne Coetzee, along with his two rugby-playing sons, Edmando and Ethan, and their close friend, Grecshlinn Bruwer, who all represented the same club.

Tragically, the four individuals lost their lives in a recent car accident, just 10 kilometers from Rehoboth.

Mourners from various backgrounds gathered at the Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium for a candlelight vigil held in their honor.

Sevens Rugby Gets Boost As Ongo's Valley Sponsors Western Suburbs Tournaments

Welwitschias lose first home game 22, 31

The visitors from the Southern Cape SWD Eagles, scored 4 consecutive tries in the first half through scrumhalf Sachin Toring, and a chip and chase from flyhalf  Adriaan van der Berg while left winger Mpho Ntsane and fullback Darryl Fortuin also touchdown for the visitors.

The Welwitschias however could only manage one try from lock Johan Luttig just before half time to bring the score to 10 28. 

In the second half, the Welwitschias stepped up their defense and came back guns blazing keep majority of the ball possession. 

Nortje step away from Rugby due to a medical condition.

Welwitschias and National Men Team 15’s hooker Obert Nortje has decided to “step away” from Rugby due to a medical condition.

Nortje, who is 25, has made 23 appearances for Namibia - including at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan - since his debut against Senegal in 2017.

He is part of the contracted players, which the Namibia Rugby Union announced at a press conference in Windhoek on Tuesday the 28h of March 2023, but his career has often been impacted by I’ll health. 

Pumas beat Welwitschias 81 - 8 in Airlink Cup

The Welwitschias lost a pre-season match by 81 to 8 to the 2022 Currie Cup champions, the Pumas this weekend.  

The Inaugural Airlink Cup, which took place on Saturday, saw the men in blue - the Welwitschias - face the Souh African franchise, the Pumas. 

The Pumas started the match off with high speed and kept the scoreboard ticking throughout the 80 mins of play.  

In the first half, the men in pink scored five tries, while the Welwitschias only managed a penalty conversion through Andre van der Berg.

Pumas defeat Welwitschias 43-0 in warm-up game

The Welwitschias recorded a heavy defeat against the 2022 Currie Cup Champions, the Pumas on Wednesday night. They lost against them by 43 to 0 in a warm-up game. 

It is anticipated that they will face an even tougher side on Saturday in the Airlink Cup, where they will play against the Pumas' first team.  

The Welwitschias had their first outing of the year in a warm-up game against the South African franchise Pumas, trailing them by 22 points at half time. 

On the day the Welwitschias fielded two full teams to give all the players some needed game time.
