Seal meat a potential delicacy

Fisheries biologist Lessyn Kalwenya believes seal meat has the potential to add to the list of local delicacies.

She says it will come with the added advantage of health benefits due to its oil being rich in Omega 3.

Kalwenya says seal meat will not only help feed thousands but can also help control and sustainably harvest the country's seal quota, which at the moment is underutilised.

The Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform, Carl Schlettwein, says MeatCo still remains a crucial entity in the meat market and that it has no immediate replacement.

Schlettwein noted that although the government cannot keep up with bailing out MeatCo all the time, there are currently no plans to replace the entity, and it remains the heartbeat of the livestock sector.

The Meatco co-opted board member Shiwana Ndeunyema says the meat corporation is struggling to produce sufficient meat to ensure increased profits.

Ndeunyema addressed the opening ceremony of Meatco's 'Meat Markets Africa' shop at Kuisebmond in Walvis Bay.

The state-owned enterprise Meatco is a meat-processing and meat-marketing entity that serves niche markets locally and internationally with premium quality products.
