Liberation Struggle veteran welcomes Independence celebrations at Katima Mulilo

A veteran of the Liberation Struggle, Ellen Musialela, has welcomed the government’s decision to host Namibia’s 34th Independence celebrations at Katima Mulilo, Zambezi Region. 

The region, at the time known as the Caprivi Strip, was an important gateway to freedom, with many freedom fighters and refugees crossing into neighbouring Zambia through the area. 

While the Caprivi Strip was initially isolated, by the 1970s, more and more Namibians were crossing into exile through Caprivi. 

BWPA unhappy with UK's Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill

The Botswana Wildlife Producers Association (BWPA) has expressed discontent with the United Kingdom's Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill. 

The bill tabled in the UK's Parliament in 2022 seeks to prohibit the import of hunting trophies into the UK.

Speaking at a media briefing in Gaborone today, the Chairperson of BWPA, Leonard Matenje, says the proposed bill will have a negative impact on communities dependent on the income from hunting management in Africa.

Namibia seeks to propel realm of space science, technology, and innovation

Namibia seeks to propel itself in the realm of space science, technology, and innovation.

Higher Education Minister Dr. Itah Kandjii-Murangi on Wednesday announced a six-member Space Science Council.

The Council will advise the National Commission on Research, Science, and Technology (NCRST) on space science and technology-related matters.

The main function of the Council is to advise the NCRST on the development and implementation of a national space science and technology agenda in all relevant sectors. 

Namibians awarded scholarships to boost green hydrogen industry

In an effort to ensure that Namibia is ready to develop its green hydrogen industry and related human resources capabilities, Namibians are awarded scholarships to learn, conduct research, and upskill.

This programme was designed to ensure the output of trained Namibians who are fit for the Green Hydrogen Energy Project.

The six-month mobility programme is scheduled to begin in Germany in the coming weeks and is aimed at skill development and capacity building.

Frank Mungunda is one of the beneficiaries of the Namibia Green Hydrogen Scholarship Programme.

Namibia faces biggest debt payment yet

A significant portion of government debt is due for repayment over the medium term.

The N$14.3 billion Eurobond, due on October 29, 2025, is the largest single-day debt maturity in the history of Namibia.

Tabling the national budget in the National Assembly, Finance and Public Enterprises Minister Iipumbu Shiimi pointed out strong growth in the gross domestic product, supported by improvements in tax collection measures by the Namibia Revenue Authority. These, he said, have led to significant improvements in several revenue streams.

The day is set aside to recognise, celebrate, and honour the contributions and impact civil society organisations have in societies.

Maximalliant Katjimune calls for investigation SME challenges

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) MP Maximalliant Katjimune has called for an investigation into the challenges faced by small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Namibia, emphasising the critical role the sector plays in the nation's economy.

Katjimune said the SME sector accounts for 90% of enterprises worldwide, employing 50% of the global workforce and contributing 40% to the gross domestic product (GDP) in emerging markets. 

Katjimune expressed concern over the low success rate of Namibian SMEs, estimating that around 70% fail shortly after commencement. 

Egypt stands ready to assist Namibia

Egypt stands ready to assist Namibia in any way it can, as the country continues to navigate the impact of the death of the late President Hage Geingob.

Mohamed Hegazy, the Special Envoy of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, conveyed a message of condolence to President Nangolo Mbumba at State House.

He says Egypt shares Namibia's grief, given the solid historical ties between the two countries that have borne successes in project cooperation over the years.

Namibia Invited to 2024 Korea-Africa Summit

Korea has extended an invitation to Namibia to participate in the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit, scheduled to take place in June.

The Korean government announced that the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit seeks higher economic cooperation with the African continent in all sectors, including industry, trade, and resources.

The inaugural summit is being held against the realisation that Africa's economic ties with Korea remain marginal.

The Korean government has yet to send a formal letter of invitation to the Namibian government through usual diplomatic channels.

China acknowledges President Geingob's role in strengthening bilateral ties

China has acknowledged the late President Hage Geingob's leadership in promoting the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between itself and Namibia. 

In 2018, China elevated bilateral relations with Namibia to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, the highest in foreign policy and anchored on the win-win principle.

Jiang Zoujun, the Special Envoy of President Xi Jinping, said China and Namibia will continue to pursue bilateral cooperation in various fields as they have over the years.
