Namibia ranks 11th on TB incidence globally

Despite the relatively low number of tuberculosis (TB) cases in the country, Namibia ranks 11th globally in terms of TB incidence and per capita expenditure on TB treatment. 

The Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Kalumbi Shangula, emphasised that the emergence of multidrug-resistant TB poses a significant health challenge for the country. 

Dr. Shangula made these remarks during the discussion of the Appropriation Bill at the committee stage.

Amb. Chaurura determined to strengthen ties between Zimbabwe and Namibia

Zimbabwe's Ambassador to Namibia, Melody Chaurura, is determined to strengthen the existing relationship between Zimbabwe and Namibia, whose roots were entrenched during the liberation struggle days.

Chaurura was speaking on the Namibia Connects programme as she reflected on Zimbabwe-Namibia relations. 

NDF gears up for independence celebrations

The Namibian Defence Force (NDF) will be holding a parade as part of Namibia's 34th Independence Anniversary at Katima Mulilo, Zambezi Region.

In preparation for the parade, the public may observe the unfamiliar movement of soldiers and armoured vehicles from March 17–22.

The ceremony's highlights will include a 21-gun salute, an aircraft fly-pass, and free-fall parachuting.

The demonstration of military precision and dedication aims to honour the nation's sovereignty and pay homage to those who have sacrificed for its defence.

5G technology to unlock untapped values

Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) is hopeful that the rollout of 5G technology in Namibia will unlock untapped values that lie within the country's digital infrastructure.

This, it says, will also result in a significant milestone for the economy and its people's livelihood. 

MTC held the first public 5G technology trail demonstration, the fifth generation of wireless connectivity, which allows for faster and more powerful connectivity that supports high-tech machines. 

Namibia's population over 3 million mark

Namibia's population has surpassed the three million mark.

This was announced by the Statistician General, Alex Shimuafeni, during the launch of the preliminary census report.

Shimuafeni also noted that average household sizes have increased to 62.7%, indicating shifting demographic trends in the country.

Namibia's increase in population is nearly a two-fold increase since its first post-independence census in 1991. 

The announcement of the increase in population excited those in attendance.

UN urges investment in women for economic progress

Women's empowerment is pivotal to creating systematic change and breaking down barriers that women face in accessing finance.

The United Nations has themed this year's Women's Day, 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress' placing a strong focus on addressing economic disempowerment. 

Women are often described as the backbone of society, while another goes, 'Give a woman a dollar, and she will multiply it."

Yet the realities on the ground suggest that gender inequality remains entrenched in some societies across the globe, and Namibia is no exception. 

APRM Country Review Report launched

The government would consider the possibility of establishing a permanent National Secretariat to continue coordinating the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) activities and programmes in Namibia.

This was said by President Nangolo Mbumba, who further stated that this would ensure the full implementation of the National Plan of Action.

President Mbumba launched the APRM Country Review Report at State House today. 

Liberation Struggle veteran welcomes Independence celebrations at Katima Mulilo

A veteran of the Liberation Struggle, Ellen Musialela, has welcomed the government’s decision to host Namibia’s 34th Independence celebrations at Katima Mulilo, Zambezi Region. 

The region, at the time known as the Caprivi Strip, was an important gateway to freedom, with many freedom fighters and refugees crossing into neighbouring Zambia through the area. 

While the Caprivi Strip was initially isolated, by the 1970s, more and more Namibians were crossing into exile through Caprivi. 

BWPA unhappy with UK's Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill

The Botswana Wildlife Producers Association (BWPA) has expressed discontent with the United Kingdom's Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill. 

The bill tabled in the UK's Parliament in 2022 seeks to prohibit the import of hunting trophies into the UK.

Speaking at a media briefing in Gaborone today, the Chairperson of BWPA, Leonard Matenje, says the proposed bill will have a negative impact on communities dependent on the income from hunting management in Africa.

Namibia seeks to propel realm of space science, technology, and innovation

Namibia seeks to propel itself in the realm of space science, technology, and innovation.

Higher Education Minister Dr. Itah Kandjii-Murangi on Wednesday announced a six-member Space Science Council.

The Council will advise the National Commission on Research, Science, and Technology (NCRST) on space science and technology-related matters.

The main function of the Council is to advise the NCRST on the development and implementation of a national space science and technology agenda in all relevant sectors.
