Keetmanshoop Municipality's 2023-2024 budget approved

The Ministry of Rural and Urban Development (MURD) has given its approval for the Keetmanshoop Municipality's operational budget for the 2023–2024 period, amounting to a substantial N$296.8 million.

Following this approval of the budget by Urban and Rural Development Minister Erastus Uutoni, the municipality presented the budget to the town's residents.

Minister Uutoni introduces amendment to Electoral Act of 2014

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, introduced an amendment to the Electoral Act of 2014 to delay the general registration of voters to no later than August 31, 2024.

The current law provides for the general registration of voters to be conducted at intervals not exceeding ten years.

The objective of the amendment is to adhere to the timelines provided for in the Act.

Section 25 of the Electoral Act provides for the general registration of voters not to exceed ten years.

Recognition of Felix Muraghuli as Hompa welcomes grievances

The recognition of  Felix Muraghuli as Hompa for the Gciriku Community has stirred discontent among some members of the royal family.

While one faction is urging the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, to reconsider his decision, another faction has opted to pursue legal action.

Since the death of Kassian Shiyambi in 2019, the Gciriku People have been without a Hompa.

The Ministry of Urban and Rural Development announced Murauli's recognition as Hompa for the Gciriku Community in a letter issued last week.

Mass Housing Programme hands over 108 houses in Swakopmund

In Swakopmund, 108 houses under the Mass Housing Programme have been handed over to residents by the government.

The structures are part of the 300 mass housing houses, which were abandoned for seven years over payment disputes.

Handing the houses over to beneficiaries at Matutura, the Urban and Rural Development Minister, Erastus Uutoni, stressed that collaboration is required to successfully deliver land and housing.

Two sewer reticulation projects completed in Ongwediva Town Council

The Ongwediva Town Council has completed two sewer reticulation projects to improve sanitation.

The first will ensure sewer reticulation at Extension 15, while the other will secure the same for the location, Sky Phase 1.

Both projects, costing N$15.2 million, were officially inaugurated by the Urban and Rural Development Minister.

Ongwediva Mayor Taarah Shalyefu says an application for sewerage connection normally costs more than N$2,000, but the council considered the economic situation of residents, who can now be connected for free until December.

Build Together Housing Programme at Karasburg dormant

The Build Together Housing Programme at Karasburg has been dormant for the past three years due to financial constraints.

The community of Karasburg told the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, during an engagement of their concern about the dormant social housing programme.

The government-funded Build Together Housing Programme, established 31 years ago, provides housing for low- and middle-income families.
