Today is Family Day, celebrated worldwide to honour the significance of family. 

Our Rundu-based news crew spoke to some residents and visitors to capture what this day means to them. 

While some families opted for a cosy day at home, others flocked to local recreational spots. 

No old-age homes in the Kavango regions - Local Expert

There is not a single old-age home in the Kavango East and West regions, and it's not because there is a shortage of financial resources to build such establishments.

A local expert says it's simply not part of the culture to isolate the elderly.

The Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare (MGEPESW) is calling on some locals to stop using people from marginalised communities for cheap labour.

The Deputy Director of Marginalised Communities, Rebekka Namwandi, says the practice is inconsiderate and has to stop.
 

Gosbert Sikerete Mandema buried

Gosbert Sikerete Mandema, the former mayor of Rundu, was buried in Rundu today.

A veteran of the Liberation Struggle, Mandema passed away in Windhoek last month at the age of 77, receiving the honor of a state funeral bestowed by President Hage Geingob.

Mourners described the late Gosbert Sikerete Mandema as a gallant and tenacious son of the soil who was willing to do anything for his country.

The former mayor of Rundu was remembered at a state memorial service in Rundu today.

Operation Basadi launched

Between January and November 2023, 183 crimes were committed against women and children in the Kavango West Region. 

The region has now joined the rest of the country in carrying out "Operation Basadi," targeting wanted persons for violence against women, children, and the elderly.
