The Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, Modestus Amutse, said that while the Kavango Cattle Ranch has improved its operations, further efforts are needed to ensure the entity becomes self-sustainable.
Amutse visited the Kavango Cattle Ranch in the Kavango West Region to familiarise himself with its operations.
The ranch has been operating at a loss for several years, but the latest financial year showed signs of improvement.
"Between 2024 and 2025 they made an improvement compared to the previous years, where they made lots of losses, and at least this time around, they made over 15 million in sales over a period of nine months, and of course, we can still sell more, and those are some of the strategies we are trying to discuss so that we can still make more sales and more money to sustain our activities."
A team of experts from the line ministry, NIDA and the Uukwangali Traditional Authority presented proposals to turn the ranch around.
The ministry will also work closely with the Uukwangali Traditional Authority.
One of the major challenges facing the ranch is the presence of nearly 200 elephants, which damage fences and disrupt operations, leading to high repair and maintenance costs.
The ministry is exploring measures to reduce the impact.
