The government will soon introduce a policy that will prohibit municipalities from selling serviced land to private developers but individuals who can afford to build their houses.

The Mayor of Swakopmund, Suamma Kautondokwa, has revealed that plans are underway for the formalisation of the DRC informal settlement.

Residents can expect the move to bring structure, development, and improved service delivery.

A memorandum of understanding on housing development has been signed between Helao Nafidi Town Council, the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia, and the Namibia Housing Action Group in Helao Nafidi, Ohangwena Region.

United Democratic Front (UDF) President Hendrik Gaobaeb has urged the government to accelerate the Mass Housing Project to tackle housing challenges and promote home ownership.

Gaobaeb said this during a courtesy call on President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah today.

The City of Windhoek aims to electrify about 2,000 houses in the informal settlements of Katutura.

So far, 113 houses have been electrified in Windhoek's Katutura areas of Babylon and three blocks in Istanbul Road in Otjomuise.

The Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (NORED) has electrified 50 houses that were recently handed over to the owners through the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia in the Zambezi Region's Bukalo village.

The electrified houses are part of phase one of an ongoing two-phase construction project.

To address the national housing backlog, the government has allocated N$75 million to the Walvis Bay Municipality for land servicing and the construction of 200 low-cost housing units at Farm 37, as part of the first phase of a broader housing initiative.

The Ongwediva Town Council has approved a budget of over N$205 million to improve service provision to the residents.

The budget allocation for 2025/26 prioritises housing, sanitation, land delivery, agriculture, sport, youth empowerment, health, and social welfare, among others.
