President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has urged Namibians to use cultural traditions to unite the country, rather than divide its national identity.

Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasised that preserving languages, customs, and heritage is essential for community building. 

Namibia's housing backlog has surpassed 270 thousand units, while more than 200,000 households are now living in informal settlements across the country.

Minister of Urban and Rural Development James Sankwasa described local authorities as the “biggest headache” facing his ministry, citing widespread financial mismanagement, weak governance, and inequitable land allocation as major obstacles.

An allocation of over N$1.5 billion has been made from sources outside the State Revenue Fund for the construction of houses under the National Housing Enterprise (NHE).

The aim of this additional funding is to accelerate the delivery of affordable housing and address the housing backlog.

The Vice President, Lucia Witbooi, has reiterated efforts to address the country's housing backlog that requires coordinated private and public sector collaboration. 

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has directed the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development (MURD) and the National Planning Commission (NPC) to prioritise initiatives by youth entrepreneurs which seek to tackle Namibia's housing backlog.

The Municipality of Swakopmund has taken another step toward addressing the housing backlog by donating 165 erven to residents living on the outskirts of the DRC informal settlement.

The Keetmanshoop Municipality recently conducted a survey on land ownership in the |Gereres residential area in its efforts to improve the living conditions of residents. 

By December 2027, the National Housing Enterprise (NHE) plans to complete the construction of 546 housing units at Katima Mulilo.

The project is expected to address the housing backlog while providing affordable housing.
