President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has expressed her condolences to the family of the late Helao Joseph Shityuwete. 

The death of veteran liberation struggle icon Helao Joseph Shityuwete has left family, friends, and fellow veterans mourning the loss of a historic giant. 

The former People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) commander and Robben Island political prisoner died at his home on Saturday. 

Kornelius Shimuafeni, the young boy who was accorded heroes' status by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, said he never expected to be honoured for his deed.

For him, it was an act of compassion for fellow human beings in need.

Herman Toivo Ya Toivo is remembered as one of Namibia's most influential liberation struggle icons – a man known not only for his contribution to the country's independence but also for his strong connection with ordinary people.

For his children, however, his legacy is deeply personal.

The 16-year-old Cornelius Shimwaafeni from Omutundungu Village in Oshana, who saved nine-month-old twins from drowning, will also be conferred a national hero status by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah tomorrow at the commemoration of Heroes Day.

A 16-year-old boy from Omutundungu village in the Omusati region is set to make history by becoming one of Namibia's youngest citizens to be conferred a hero's status.

Former Chief of Defence Lieutenant General (Rtd) Solomon "Jesus" Hawala was buried at the Old Ongwediva Lutheran cemetery in the Oshana Region.

The memorial service of veteran of the liberation struggle, Commander and national hero Lieutenant General (RTD) Solomon Hawala, is underway at Ohakweenyanga village in the Oshana Region. 

Namibian war veteran Lazarus !Guiteb was buried in a sombre military send-off at his hometown of Otjiwarongo.

Aged 83, !Guiteb was accorded an official funeral by President Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah, who described him as a hero of note.
