Kornelius Shimuafeni, the 16-year-old boy set to be declared a national hero for saving twins in Omusati from drowning, says he is humbled by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah's decision to confer him with the honour.

Speaking from his family homestead in Omutundungu village, he says the act has now become a blessing in disguise.

Growing up in Omutundungu Village since age 4 and raised by his mother's aunt, the Grade 7 learner was emotional and still in disbelief over the recognition.

Since his bravery made headlines on NBC News, Shimuafeni's name has featured in conversations across Namibia.

For Shimuafeni, life in Omutundungu village has always been simple: fetch water, sweep the yard, help in the kitchen, and look after goats after school. Like any other 16-year-old, he says the recognition is hard to believe.

"I am happy to hear this news. Imagine what it means for me to hear on social media the president mention my name; it is a dream I never had.  Even last year I assisted two friends of mine who could have drowned. I never did it for clout, but God had bigger plans for me. I am humbled. But if my story can remind others to help when it matters, then maybe that's the real honour."

Johanna Haidula, his guardian, described him as a quiet, reliable and obedient child who regularly helps with household chores, adding that he is talented and that the honour is both befitting and humbling to their family and community.

"He is a really good child, and I was blessed to raise him from a very young age. He is quiet and full of jokes and full of unimaginable wisdom, so we are happy by this honour set to be bestowed upon him by our beloved president."

Omutundungu village headman, Lukas Shimbaba, beamed with pride and said the quiet community is now in the spotlight since the teenager's selfless deed.

"I am proud to have a heroic child in our village for helping save many lives. I wish all young people could emulate this immaculate example to be selfless and give help where they can because many could not do that."

Since NBC News broke the story, Kornelius's name has travelled far beyond Omutundungu with donation offers and people making trips to the small village just to meet him.
