Namibia is launching a major initiative to strengthen its beekeeping sector and overhaul the management of honeybees. 

A beekeeper operating at Omega 1 in the Kavango East Region says demand for honey has become overwhelming.

David Mushavanga runs a small-scale beekeeping project and says customers from across the country are eager to taste his product, which is marketed as “Bushman Honey".

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says World Bee Day must serve as an opportunity to educate people, especially the youth, on the importance of bees and the growing opportunities within sustainable beekeeping. 

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform says there are no plans to import any bees into the country from South Africa.

Fifteen Kunene residents were trained in beekeeping, where they were introduced to modern beekeeping practices and techniques for sustainable honey production.
