Shack fire victims traumatised

Families of the victims of the recent shack fire in the Tulinawa and Mondesa residential areas in Swakopmund are still traumatised and left at the mercy of good Samaritans.

The incident occurred on one property at the intersection of Monica Geingos and Stefanus Shipanga streets and spread to other properties, leaving 42 people in the cold, including 11 school learners and 3 minors.

About 12 dwellings burned to ashes.

Reptile Mineral Resources donates trees

The Managing Director of Let's Do It Namibia, Tanswell Rooinasie, urged the public and private sectors to support environmental education projects in schools.

During the donation of trees by Reptile Mineral Resources, worth N$30 thousand, to five schools in Swakopmund.

The Let's Do It Namibia organisation implemented a tree planting project, the Sustainable Environmental Education Programme (SEEP), in 2022.

SEEP educates learners about sustainable living practises and encourages them to incorporate those principles into their daily lives.

Helicopter crash suspect appears in court

A 34-year-old woman, Anje Nauhaus, has appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate's Court in connection with the tragic helicopter accident near the Swakopmund airport.

Nauhaus is accused of fraud, forgery, uttering, and a violation of the Civil Aviation Act.

She is also charged with culpable homicide.

It is alleged that the suspect unlawfully and intentionally misrepresented a fake, forged, and altered certificate of the registration and flight test permit of the helicopter that crashed last week.

Men implicated in fatal stabbing of Peter Amwaalwa appear in Swakopmund Magistrate's Court

Four men accused in the stabbing and killing of 22-year-old Peter Bocky Amwaalwa made their first appearance in the Swakopmund Magistrate's Court.

Amwaalwa was found dead in a pool of blood by members of the police on patrol in Mondesa more than a week ago.

Suspects Ellen Goa-Eiseb (17), Linden Duwe (27), Sidney Jooste (24), and John Meriri (25) face a charge of murder each.

The four, among them a minor, are suspected of inflicting stabbing wounds on Amwaalwa, which caused his death.

High influx of people at coastal towns puts pressure on schools

The high influx of people in the coastal towns of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay has put pressure on schools there despite the construction of additional classrooms and projects.

In his State of the Region Address, the Governor of the Erongo Region, Neville Andre, said during the period under review, the Directorate of Education, Art, and Culture has recorded an increase in learner enrollments from 51,942 last year to 53,538 this year.

This represents an increase of 1,596 learners.

Rauch Elohim Foundation saves 60 babies

The Rauch Elohim Foundation has so far saved 60 babies who could have been otherwise abandoned.

Police statistics show that 140 babies have been abandoned since 2018, and some landed in the Baby Box at Swakopmund.

Ronel Peters and her husband founded the Rauch Elohim Foundation five years ago.

Their goal was to prevent baby dumping and to assist desperate mothers who cannot care for their children by leaving them in the Baby Boxer Saver.

So far, 60 babies, including the seven currently in their care, have been left in the box.

Leaders lack an understanding of green hydrogen - Tegako Donatus

Walvis Bay Rural Constituency Councillor Tegako Donatus says traditional and community leaders lack an understanding of what green hydrogen is about, hence the need for more education.

Donatus highlighted this during a meeting at Swakopmund with the Erongo Governor and a German delegation from the Fraunhofer Institute.

Donatus welcomed the emergence of green hydrogen production as an opportunity for economic growth, the development of infrastructure, employment opportunities, and skills transfer.

Swakopmund Soup kitchen pleads for dining hall

A soup kitchen on the outskirts of Swakopmund in the DRC informal settlement is pleading with good Samaritans to assist in building a dining hall as more than 300 children have to endure all types of weather conditions when collecting their meals from an open area.

60-year-old Anna Karises is the founder of Ann's Angel's soup kitchen.

The soup kitchen is a lifeline for many families in the community, and it provides much-needed nutrition to 300 underprivileged children twice a week.

Miss Namibia pageant organisers ready for pageant

Organisers of the coveted Miss Namibia pageant say it is all systems go in Swakopmund this weekend.

The main pageant will be preceded by Miss Teen Namibia on Friday, followed by the big occasion on Saturday.

Organising Committee Member Beaulah Boois-Beukes says the stage is set for the contestants to showcase their talent.

The annual glam and glitz events bring together Namibians from all walks of life as well as giving a platform to local designers to showcase their creations.

This is according to the Minister in the Presidency, Christine ||Hoebes who says the government has identified sectors where women and youth have a competitive advantage.
