Etosha Fishing Company is under pressure to land the historic 10,000 metric tonnes of pilchard allocated by the government.

The company landed its first consignment of pilchards last week following an 8-year ban. This is after the government decided to grant Eco Fish Farm 10,000 metric tonnes.

Workers at Etosha Fishing took to the streets of Walvis Bay demanding sustainable fishing quotas from the government.

The employees argue that the current horse mackerel quotas for the company are not enough to keep them employed for the whole year.

The Namibia Seamen and Allied Workers Union has welcomed Etosha Fishing's decision to reopen its cannery.

The Namibia Seaman and Allied Workers Union, NASAWU, has appealed to the Government to give Etosha Fishing a horse mackerel quota in order to save more than one thousand jobs at Walvis Bay.
