Mourners pay last respects to retired Colonel John Shipoke

Mourners paid their last respects to retired Colonel John Nghipangelwa Shipoke at Ondobe in the Ohangwena Region.

Shipoke died at the age of 66 on the 19th of March.

Shipoke is a freedom fighter and veteran of the liberation struggle who went into exile in 1974.

He attended advanced infantry military training in Kongwa in Tanzania and he was eventually deployed to the frontline as a special military man.

Shipoke participated in many battles and decisive engagements with the enemy, and because of his performance, he served as a Chief of Artillery in 1982.

Ohangwena Region the Tanga Region, Tanzania to sign cooperation agreement

Namibia's Ohangwena Region and the Tanga Region in Tanzania are expected to sign a cooperation agreement in various areas.

The political leadership and several business representatives from Ohangwena attended an engagement as part of the Namibia-Tanzania Joint Commission on Cooperation.

The engagement was facilitated by Namibia's Ambassador to Tanzania, Lebbius Tobias, who said the partnership aims to strengthen the trade links and expand economic cooperation between the two regions.

Schools re-open in Ohangwena Region

About 29 schools that were closed due to flooding have been re-opened in Ohangwena Region. 

This followed the subsiding of flood waters.
The floods affected 36 schools in the region, disturbing learning for more than 17 000 learners.

Among 30 schools that closed, 29 have now been re-opened, with exception of Shingunguma Primary School. 

Shingunguma Primary School is in Ongenga Constituency, in Eengava Village. 

The school closed on 17 January, affecting about 377 learners and 11 teachers.

Death toll from drowning incidents due to the floods has increase to four in Oshana

The death toll from drowning incidents due to the floods has increased to four. 

The latest incident happened at Onawa in the Oshana Region after a man attempted to make his way home and allegedly drowned in the deep end of a man-made hole that was dug by the town council as an embankment to shield some sections of the town from being flooded. 

Divers have retrieved the body of the deceased from the water. His name cannot be released as his next of kin are yet to be informed. 

PDM donates mattresses and tents to flood victims at Oshikango

The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) President McHenry Venaani has expressed his disappointment in the government saying that it is failing to find a permanent solution to mitigate the effects of reoccurring floods in the country.

He says over the past 30 years government could have built water catchment dams to harvest flood water and to address the effects of floods.

He made these remarks when he donated mattresses and tents to the value of N$30 000 to flood victims at Oshikango in the Ohangwena Region.

NamRA celebrates International Customs Day at Oshikango

The Namibia Revenue Agency joined the global customs community in commemorating International Customs Day at Oshikango border post in Ohangwena region. 

NamRA's Commissioner Sam Shivute says NAMRA chose to make the day at Oshikango, because it's a major hive of business activity.

The day is celebrated to acknowledge the crucial duties that customs officials perform daily.

Shivute says NamRA will continue to build on the legacy set by the government through the Finance Ministry and in line with the protocol of the World  Customs Organization.

Flood Risk Communication Center commissioned in the Ohangwena

The Information and Communication Technology Minister commissioned the Flood Risk Communication Center at Oshikango in the Ohangwena Region.

The center will serve as a platform where information and updates are communicated about the flood situation to the public by authorized personnel, to avoid disinformation circulating.  

Opening the center, Dr. Peya Mushelenga cautioned the public to stop spreading false information.

Teaching at Onghala and Shingunguma Primary Schools suspended

The Directorate of Education, Arts, and Culture in Ohangwena Region has suspended teaching at the Onghala and Shingunguma Primary Schools as the flood waters are reportedly rising in the area.

A total of six schools have been affected by the floods.

These are Ndilokelwa, Shingunguma, Ohaingu, Onghala, and Onyofi Combined Schools, as well as Uudjombala Senior Secondary School.

Monday marks day four of Oimbadalunga Village flood

Today (Monday) marks the fourth day since flood waters from neighboring Angola poured in at Oimbadalunga Village in the Ohangwena Region.

As the water keeps trickling in, residents and visitors alike are urged not to hit the panic button, as authorities say the situation remains under control.

Politicians, the security cluster, and broader communities have all been waiting with bated breath, hoping flood waters will not result in any damage or injury.

Flood waters enters Engela Constituency in Ohangwena Region

Flood waters from southern Angola entered the Engela Constituency of the Ohangwena Region.

Residents living in flood-prone areas in the Ohangwena Region have been urged to be vigilant of the dangers that flood waters pose.

It was reported that the Cunene Province of southern Angola continues to receive good rainfall, leaving many areas submerged.

The water flooded into the flood streams toward the Angola-Namibia border, filling up the floodplains such as the Oshana shaNalumono stream.
