Swapo Party assigns leaders in ||Kharas Region

The Swapo Party in the ||Kharas Region introduced its newly assigned and reassigned leadership, with Lucia Witbooi as Chairperson.

During the party's regional Executive Committee meeting at Keetmanshoop, Coordinator Matheus Mumbala informed the attendees that the new leadership has a wealth of experience that will assist in grooming and improving the party's performance in the upcoming elections.

Likius Ngesheya overall winner of Science Fair

Likius Ngesheya from Suiderlig Secondary School in Keetmanshoop is this year's overall winner of the Science Fair. More than one hundred students from seventeen schools in the ||Kharas Region took part in the two-day science fair.

The Regional Science Fair, sponsored by the Anglo-American Namibian Foundation, aims to promote creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills among learners.

Number of classrooms under construction in ||Kharas Region

A number of classrooms are under construction in the ||Kharas Region to ease overcrowding.

The cost of the development is estimated at N$9 million.

The classroom project includes the construction of two four-classroom blocks and an ablution block at Ambrosius Amutenya Primary School a three-classroom block at Keetmanshoop Primary, a three-classroom block at Keetmanshoop Secondary, and a five-classroom block at Kaitsi !Gubeb Combined Schools.
 
The government funded the construction of the classrooms, whose completion rate stands at 80%.

Koes Community hosts beauty pageant and dance competition

The Community of Koes in the ||Kharas Region hosted a beauty pageant and a dance competition recently.

Rodneycia Basson was crowned Miss Koes, and Young Okkz was crowned dance champion of 2023.

The Miss HFK Beauty Pageant was organised by Ferdinand Swartbooi to provide a platform for Koes residents to diversify their economic potential, which largely depends on farming and agriculture.

The beauty pageants aim was to motivate girls to self-improve and empower them.

Youth in ||Kharas attend workshop on mainstream politics

Twenty young people participated in a one-day workshop at Keetmanshoop in the ||Kharas Region with a focus on mainstream politics and youth involvement in the democratic process.


The workshop is facilitated by Queen Pieter, a youth activist who says that the participation of young people in mainstream politics strengthens democracy and the rule of law.

She says that voter apathy among young people creates the impression that young people are not interested in politics and discussions of development.

||Kharas Region residents support motion to write-off of water and electricity debts

Residents of the ||Kharas Region have thrown their support behind the motion on the writing-off of water and electricity debts that local authorities owe bulk suppliers, NamWater and NamPower.

They shared their sentiments at the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Resources and Community Development public hearing at Keetmanshoop.
 
Defaulters owe NamWater N$1.7 billion, while the debt owed to NamPower stands at N$1.5 billion.

Figures revealed that local authorities are the biggest defaulters.

Keetmanshoop Rural Constituency called to vote for PDM's Johannes Eiman

The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) leader McHenry Venaani has called on voters in the Keetmanshoop Rural Constituency to come out in numbers on the 15th of May to vote for Johannes Eiman.

Venaani made the call when he addressed the party's rally at Aroab in the ||Kharas Region. 

The by-election to elect a new regional councillor became necessary after the Landless People's Movement last year recalled Gerrit Witbooi.

Vanaani told the gathering that his party remains relevant and continues to play its part in the country's political landscape.

!Aman clan pay tribute to fallen heroes

Tribesmen and women from the !Aman clan, a sub-tribe of the Nama people, gathered at Aus settlement in the ||Kharas Region to pay tribute to their fallen heroes during the clan's annual cultural festival. 

This year's festival is being held under the theme 'Faith, Love, and Hope'.

Gaob Johannes Frederick, addressing his subjects, implored them to continue fostering social cohesion.

He says the annual gathering should no longer be just business as usual.

Youth called to aspire entrepreneurship as a solution high unemployment rate

The Minister of Sports, Youth, and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero, has encouraged young people to aspire towards entrepreneurship as a solution to addressing the high rate of youth unemployment.

Spearheaded by the Begin To Imagine (BTI) youth group, the Expo is the first to be hosted by Bethanie Village.

Tjongarero made the call during the opening of the Expo at Bethanie Village in ||Kharas Region, where she pledged N$20 000 towards the hosting of the Expo.

SWAPO in ||Kharas dismiss claims of leadership backing independent candidate

The Swapo Party in the ||Kharas Region has rubbished speculations that some of its leadership backs independent candidate Gerrit Witbooi rather than the party's candidate Elias !Kharuxab in the upcoming by-election.

The by-election in the Keetmanshoop Rural Constituency, which is necessitated by the recent withdrawal of Witbooi by the Landless People's Movement (LPM) as Regional Councillor, is slated for May 15.
