Hardap, ||Kharas kick-start efforts to put in place own power systems

Local and Regional Authorities in the Hardap and ||Kharas regions kick-started efforts to put in place their own power systems in partnership with independent power producers. 

Political Office bearers of the two regions gathered at Keetmanshoop to explore ways how to set up their own power systems. 

The ||Kharas Regional Council Chairperson Joseph Isaack explains that the authorities through their own power systems want to create employment and make access to electricity cheaper. 

TransNamib train derails in ||Kharas Region

A TransNamib train that was carrying 22 wagons of manganese was derailed this morning about 50 kilometers outside Luderitz in the ||Kharas Region.

TransNamib spokesperson Abigail Raubenheimer confirmed the derailment in a statement.

She said three employees of the parastatal who were on board sustained injuries and were taken for medical treatment.

Raubenheimer said TransNamib activated its emergency response plan and temporarily suspended train service operations on the affected railway line.

Namibia Grape Company exports 2 million boxes

The Namibia Grape Company at Aussenkehr in the ||Kharas Region has exported more than 2 million boxes of grapes to the European market over the last season.

The company's MD, Gideon Nuunyango, revealed this during the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources oversight visit to the project.

According to Nuunyango, the company packed 2,2 million grapes during last year's harvest, with each box weighing 4.5 kilograms, exceeding the targeted total of 1,8 million cartons.

Orange River Irrigation Project workers at Aussenkehr uncertain about their jobs

Workers of the Orange River Irrigation Project (ORIP) at Aussenkehr in the ||Kharas Region say they have been left uncertain about their jobs following the government's recent decision to dissolve Agricultural Business Development Agency. 

ORIP is one of the country's eleven green scheme projects managed by state-owned Agribusdev. 

The ORIP workers voiced their concerns about possibly losing their job security during an oversight visit by a Parliamentary Standing Committee. 

An unproductive green scheme was given as the reason for Agribusdev's dissolution. 

St. Therese Secondary, Nowak Primary schools receive book donations

Learners of St. Therese Secondary and Nowak Primary Schools at Tses Village in ||Kharas Region can now broaden their knowledge through reading books, thanks to a library donation.

Various international members of the Rotary Network funded the library housed in one of the Nowak Primary School classrooms.

A German couple, Barbara and Wolfgang Mathea, initiated the library project and sourced funding from fellow Rotarians.

Both retired teachers say they decided to invest in the country's education sector following their first vacation to Namibia in 1993.

MANWU unhappy with working conditions at construction of Aussenkehr Clinic

The General Secretary of the Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union, Justina Jonas, is unhappy with the current working conditions of employees constructing the Aussenkehr Clinic in the ||Kharas Region.

There are about 15,000 inhabitants who work mainly for grape-producing companies.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services is currently constructing a new clinic for residents, which started in October last year.

Deadlock in wage negotiation leads to strike threat at Keetmanshoop Municipality

A strike is looming at the Keetmanshoop Municipality after wage negotiations reached a deadlock. 

Regional Coordinator for the Namibia Public Workers Union (NAPWU) in ||Kharas Region, Kleophas Katuuo told nbc News that municipal workers voted in favor of industrial action. 

This follows after the Labor Arbitrator issued a certificate of an unresolved dispute on January 30.

He accused the Keetmanshoop Municipality's management of having snubbed conciliatory meetings aimed at ending the wage dispute, leaving workers with no choice but to strike.

NUST calls on students with 22 points and more to apply for non-STEM programs

The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) is calling on students with 22 points and more to apply for non-STEM programs at its regional and satellite campuses. 

Wynard Diergaardt, the Director of Lifelong Learning, addressed an information session with ||Kharas Governor Aletha Fredericks, at Keetmanshoop. 

NUST is to introduce its bridging educational programs to students in the ||Kharas Region. 

Students can now apply for non-STEM subjects which include Commerce and Social Sciences. 

A mother at Noordoewer gives birth to a set of co-joined twins

A mother from Noordoewer settlement in the ||Kharas Region gave birth to a set of co-joined twins at the Keetmanshoop State Hospital.

Medical workers told nbc News that the twins were co-joined at the chest and abdomen. 

They described the twins' medical condition as stable. 

The twins were transported to Windhoek on Friday for further medical assessment. 

Although the mother of the twins Agnes Shikwambi gave consent to nbc News team to film her twins, attempts to get approval and comment from the regional health directorate proved unsuccessful. 

Aus settlement residents still experiencing water troubles

Residents of the Aus settlement in the ||Kharas Region are still experiencing water troubles.

Their borehole has dried up as a result of inadequate underground water.

ǃNamiǂNûs Constituency Councillor Suzan Ndjaleka has called on residents to be patient as her office seeks a lasting solution to the settlement's water woes. 

She said the low water supply at the settlement, which resulted in residents' water being rationed during certain hours, has adversely affected ongoing community brick-making and shack dwellers' upliftment projects.
