Japan continues support for education and agriculture in Namibia

Japan has, to date, dispatched more than 100 teachers across different schools, while the construction of additional classrooms in Namibia continues.

Funded through Japan's "Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects' programme, Namibia has been a beneficiary of school buildings and around 300 classrooms since 1997.

Japan's Ambassador to Namibia provided an update on this and other matters of mutual concern between the two countries to President Nangolo Mbumba at State House.

Two men arrested with contraband at Kongola check point

Two male suspects are in custody, and their truck was seized by the Namibian Police at Kongola after contraband was found in their possession during a routine search at the checkpoint.

The suspects, aged 27 and 37, respectively, are said to be employed by a local trucking company.

They were returning from Zambia on Thursday, heading to the coast.

NamPol regional commander in Zambezi, Commissioner Andreas Shilelo, addressed the media in Kongola following the discovery of the illegal consignment.

Malaria cases expected to increase significantly during rainy season

Namibia has recorded a total of 1,345 malaria cases since November 2023 in malaria-prone regions.

Cases are expected to increase significantly during the rainy season.

Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr. Ester Muinjangue, highlighted the ministry's concerns in an interview with nbc News.

Malaria cases have been on the rise in malaria-endemic regions.

Of the total 1,345 cases recorded nationwide, 133 were found to be severe and resulted in hospital admission.

Parked truck catches fire

A Zambian truck driver narrowly escaped death at the Ngoma border post in the Zambezi Region when his parked truck caught fire while he was sleeping. 

The driver is reported to have arrived at Ngoma Post Tuesday morning from Zambia via Botswana in transit to Walvis Bay, transporting copper.

Due to delays by the clearing agents, he had to stay overnight at the border between Namibia and Botswana.

The driver was awoken by another truck driver who was parked behind him at around eleven o'clock in the night when his truck caught fire.

Zambezi Expo raises N$45,000

A gala dinner was held to raise funds for the much anticipated three-day first-ever Zambezi Tourism and Business Expo slated for this week.

The expo, hosted by MovasK Investment with the aim of showcasing the richness of the region, will be held under the theme "Unleashing Tourism Potential in the Zambezi Region" from the 27th to the 29th of this month.

Zambezi governor Alufea Sampofu, who is also the chairperson of the Zambezi Tourism Forum, applauded the private sector efforts to rise and rebuild the region from the brink of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Conservancies in Zambezi receive N$37 million

The Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism and stakeholders handed over N$37 million in project funding, grants, and equipment to various conservancies in the Zambezi Region.

Of the N$37 million, N$20 million is intended for poverty-oriented support for community conservation, while N$17 million is directed towards community livelihood development and wildlife conflict management.

Two projects are co-financed by Germany and the Namibian government.

Masubia pledges allegiance to Namibia

The Masubia Traditional Authority in the Zambezi Region held a demonstration to denounce calls for secessionism in the region.

In a petition addressed to the Zambezi Governor, Masubia Traditional Authority demonstrators outlined that they are not part of what they termed the unconstitutional, hostile, and aggressive activities of those promoting the breakaway of the region from the rest of Namibia.

Masubia Traditional Authority Councillor Richwell Kasale, who read the petition, emphasised that secessionist ideas put a blot on the shining democracy of Namibia.

State of government infrastructures in Zambezi a concern

The Zambezi Regional Leadership is concerned about the state of some government infrastructure in the region.

It called on Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises Ipumbu Shiimi to ensure that funds are made available to improve service delivery.

Shiimi is in the Zambezi Region for the next financial year's national budget consultations.

The Head of Immigration, Daisy Musweu, also raised concern about a lack of accommodation for immigration officials at the Katima Mulilo Border Post.

Community hostels provide relief for students

Community hostels are becoming prevalent, saving learners from walking long distances to and from school.

This is an apparent commitment shown by communities and other stakeholders towards the education of their children. There are 18 community hostels in the Zambezi Region. Community hostels are found in rural areas, including Kabbe South and North, Judea Lyaboloma, and Linyanti, where learners walk long distances to and from school.
