Kavango East region expects better examination results

The acting Education Director in the Kavango East Region says despite the difficulties experienced by learners prior to the exams, the region is bound to perform better in 2023 than it did in 2022.

Christine Shilima was speaking ahead of the release of exam results by the Ministry of Education on Wednesday.

Shilima says there were various factors that negatively affected the teaching and learning process, saying some learners were not psychologically ready for the exams.

ECD foundation receives focus

The Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture has resolved to focus on literacy and numeracy skills in the lower primary school phases to lay a strong foundation for tertiary education.

Deputy Minister Faustina Calley said this when she outlined the ministry's future plans during the President's media briefing on Monday.

Among the issues the ministry will focus on are infrastructure, literacy programmes, and digital learning.

Basic Education Act commences

The Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture has announced the commencement of the Basic Education Act (Act No. 3) of 2020.

The Act has been in operation since the fifth of October this year.

This legislation replaces the Education Act 2001 (Act No. 16 of 2001) and is aimed at aligning it with Namibia's commitment to meeting the educational aspirations of all its citizens. 

Education Ministry announced commencement of Basic Education Act

The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture announced the commencement of the Basic Education Act (Act No. 3 of 2020).

The Act has been in operation since October 5 of this year.
         
This legislation replaces the Education Act 2001 (Act No. 16 of 2001) and aligns well with Namibia’s commitment to meeting the educational aspirations of all its citizens.

The Minister of Education, Anna Nghipondoka, says the new Act does not only address basic education but also adult education and lifelong learning, reflecting the diverse needs of society.

Unemployed teachers accuse Education Ministry of poor leadership

Unemployed teachers from the two Kavango regions are accusing the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture of poor leadership and a lack of forward planning.

The unemployed teachers say the ministry is hampering the provision of quality education in the country.

Dressed in their graduation gowns, the group of unemployed teachers decided to voice their dissatisfaction with how the ministry of education is dealing with their plight.

National Literary Festival launched

The Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture, in collaboration with the National Library and Archives, has established a platform for 74 Namibian writers aimed at nurturing a culture of writing and reading within the country.

The two entities launched the National Literary Festival to celebrate Namibian literature, stories, creativity, and the culture of reading.

The festival's purpose is to promote authors' books and foster a love of literature and writing.

Moses Sikerete pleads for more time on Ndama school construction

The Chairperson of the Kavango East Regional Youth Forum, Moses Sikerete, has called on the Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture to give the leadership enough time to come up with a solution to the dispute around the construction of a new school in Rundu's Ndama Informal Settlement.

This comes after the ministry requested that the leadership find a solution to the matter before July 23.

The Education Ministry agreed to fund the construction of the school, as a means to decongest the old Ndama School, where the junior and combined schools are presently accommodated.

EduConservation Project host teacher training workshop

Ministry of Education dismisses claim of same-sex relationships curriculum

The Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture says it does not have a curriculum in which learners are taught to become homosexuals, as perceived by some segments of society.

A statement issued by the ministry's Executive Director, Sanet Steenkamp, comes after representatives of faith-based organisations and some citizens have alleged that the school curriculum teaches or promotes same-sex relationships in schools.

Steenkamp says the ministry's teaching does not favour or discriminate against learners on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
