The Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform last week confirmed an outbreak of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, commonly referred to as lung sickness, in the Kunene Region.

Farmers in the Kunene and Omusati regions say non-functional abattoirs and poor livestock infrastructure are primary obstacles to accessing a profitable market. 

Although housing provision in Outjo has been ongoing efficiently, Acting Chief Executive Officer Jaco Labuschagne says the provision of services has been a challenge.

The Minister of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform, Carl Schlettwein, said the water reuse method is an approach that can be taken in Kunene to address the water shortage in the region.

Schlettwein said this at the joint commemoration of World Wetlands Day and World Water Day in Opuwo.

Kunene Governor Marius Sheya says the government's drought mitigation programme has been a relief to the farmers.

Sheya was speaking at the handover of livestock, stoves, and water-softening borehole technologies at Khorixas auction kraal in the Kunene Region.
