The Inspector General of the Police is in the Kunene Region to engage the communities and assess their needs. 

While there, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo will share with the communities the role of law enforcement agencies in society.

The communities informed Shikongo about the need for police stations in various areas while also expressing their concern about an increase in alcohol and drug abuse, stock theft, and gender-based violence.

Shikongo noted that the community must collaborate with the police to mitigate crimes in the region.

Kunene Governor warns against tribalistic remarks

Kunene Governor Marius Sheya has warned against tribalistic remarks pitting the Damara and Nama tribesmen at Khorixas.

Sheya called out issues brewing at the Ward 9 communal area, where the locals are at loggerheads over alleged non-ancestral people being allocated plots to farm and residing there.

Speaking over the weekend at Fransfontein, Sheya warned that tribalism can trigger conflict and that bitter remarks voiced on local radios must be stopped immediately, as any Namibian is allowed to reside wherever they please.

Outjo residents urged to keep the late President's legacy alive

Outjo Constituency Councillor John Antsino urged residents to keep the late president's legacy alive by tapping into the wisdom he displayed during his tenure.

Antsino was speaking at Kunene's final tribute service dedicated to the late Hage Geingob at Outjo.

All 40 churches from Outjo gathered at the Etoshapoort stadium to pay their respects to the fallen giant.

Kunene Region pays tribute to Late President Geingob

The Kunene Region held a memorial service to honour  the late President, Hage Geingob.

Kunene Governor Marius Sheya at the event said, it is so unreal that Hage Geingob is no more.

Appointed by the late President Hage Geingob as governor of Kunene at just 28 years old, Marius Sheya had a distinct relationship with him.

The news of Geingob's passing is still something he says he is struggling to come to terms with. 

Kunene Region attends to slow delivery of drought relief

The Kunene Region has resorted to hiring private transport for the distribution of drought relief in the region.

This was revealed by the Kunene Regional Governor, Marius Sheya, following concerns raised by Khorixas Constituency Councillor, Sebastian !Gobs, who last month indicated that the distribution programme is hampered by a lack of transportation.

The Kunene Region accounts for close to 30,000 people who have been affected by the prolonged and extreme drought since 2013, which has put a strain on food security and agricultural activities.

Omuhonga Combined School gets facelift

Deputy Minister of Education, Arts, and Culture, Faustina Caley handed over four hostel blocks, a matron's quarter, a kitchen, a dining hall, two ablution blocks, and two teacher houses to Omuhonga Combined School.

The facilities were constructed at a cost of more than N$79.5 million.

Omuhonga Combined School has grades zero to eleven, and the facility was dilapidated, with no accommodation for both teachers and learners.

Against this background, the school was selected as a beneficiary of the Africa Development Bank's financial assistance.

Kunene Governor urges public to refrain from taking disturbing videos

The Kunene Regional Governor, Marius Sheya, has urged the public to refrain from taking disturbing videos.

Sheya made these remarks during the handover of materials and food parcels worth more than N$78,000 by the Japanese Embassy to the Kazetjindire Angelika Muharukua Maternity waiting home in Opuwo.

Sheya was making reference to the video of an expecting mother who gave birth in front of the Opuwo district hospital, highlighting that the woman was in labor while on the way to the hospital.

BoN launches modified N$20 banknote

The Bank of Namibia on Monday launched and activated the modified N$20 banknote at Opuwo.

The modified N$20 note contains the signature of the current central bank governor, Johannes !Gawaxab. The N$20 and N$200 notes were last reprinted in 2018.

!Gawaxab said this at the launch that was held in Opuwo to promote financial inclusion. 

Upgrade of Skeleton Coast National Park progresses well

Construction and upgrading of the multi-million dollar Skeleton Coast National Park are progressing well ahead of the festive season.

Kunene Governor Marius Sheya says the skeleton coast upgrade is expected to attract more tourism activities to the area.

For years, the entry and exit gates to this park were in a dilapidated state, with no proper accommodation facilities, offices, or housing units for staff members.

New offices and a workshop are now being set up for both the police and staff of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
