Child rape continues unabated

A Grade 6 female learner was allegedly raped and later fell pregnant in the Oshikoto Region.

The police report states that the incident occurred between April and July of this year.

The suspect in this matter is a 37-year-old man; the unspeakable act, according to the police, happened over a period of time on many occasions at the victim's parents house.

In another case, the victim is fourteen, and the suspect is her cousin.

At Rehoboth, a mother of a 15-year-old has opened a case of rape.

GBV victims report cases to traditional authorities instead of the police for compensation

Some victims of gender-based violence (GBV) have resorted to reporting cases to the traditional authorities instead of the police in order to get compensation.

This came to light during a meeting between the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Gender Equality, Social Development, and Family Affairs at Otjiwarongo.

Otjiwarongo has recorded 29 cases of rape and 98 domestic violence cases since last year.

Kavango East Region records high cases of GBV

Despite efforts by various organisations to curb the scourge of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the country, the Kavango East Region continues to record high cases of GBV.

According to statistics from the GBV Unit in Rundu, on average, the region records over 5,000 cases of GBV annually and over 400 cases every month.

A senior social worker at the unit, Aurelia Mukundu, while sharing the statistics, indicated that there are still many unreported cases in the community for fear of victimisation or retaliation by the suspects.

Committees set up in Outjo to curb rising GBV, teenage pregnancies and drug abuse

Escalating cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), teenage pregnancies and drug abuse have resulted in committees being set up at Outjo in the Kunene Region to help bring the situation under control before it gets completely out of hand. 

Outjo Constituency Councilor, Johannes Antsino says his office is hard at work, collaborating with those committees that comprise private and public agencies, to integrate services and reach more people at risk.

Community activist Rosa Namises has called for concerted efforts to fight violence against women and children.

Namises, while speaking at the farewell of Dantanie Eiseb in Windhoek, who was brutally murdered allegedly by his stepfather in Walvis Bay said, speaking out only after the acts are committed is not good enough.

More women and children continue to lose their lives untimely, therefore is a need for concerted efforts.

Namises says Namibians should stand together to prevent these violent acts before they happen.

Police Spokesperson Kauna Shikwambi has confirmed that police are investigating a possible case of GBV after a video of a child who was allegedly beaten with a bottle and sustained cuts on her hand by her guardian surfaced on the net this morning.

In the video, the young girl narrates that her guardian, who was at a bar then, called her to go get her baby, but she did not hear the call. The guardian allegedly then went on to interrogate the child and beat her up. She says it's not the first time she's been physically abused.

Rape cases said to be highest form of GBV

Rape cases are said to be the most common form of gender-based violence, with nearly 1000 cases being reported annually.

This was revealed by Erongo Governor Neville Andre in his speech read by Derous Benson, Walvis Bay Urban Constituency Councilor, during the "her voice speak up campaign against sexual and gender-based violence."

Rape, a form of sexual violence, has been linked to an increase in mental health issues, HIV/AIDS infections, unsafe abortions, and alcohol and drug abuse.

|Khomas Governor calls for unity to end GBV

Namibia needs to strengthen its collective efforts in the area of literacy, and improved access to justice, especially for rural women, which continues to limit the effective realization of human rights for women in Namibia.
