Dudu Murorua urges institutions to review their record-keeping

The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Accounts, Dudu Murorua, has called on local authorities and public institutions to scrutinise their record-keeping for the purpose of effective service delivery.

Murorua said this in an interview with nbc News at Oshakati during their week-long public hearing on the utilisation of public funds by local authorities.

The committee held a public hearing with the Katima Mulilo Town Council on the utilisation of public funds in the financial year that ended in March 2019.

BoN economic reporting workshop

The Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) says it will leave no stone unturned in implementing its Tax Law Enforcement Strategy to ensure that what is owed to the state is paid.

Soon after its establishment, NamRA continued its drive to optimise Namibia's tax revenue collection.

This has led to some reforms at NamRA offices countrywide to ensure compliance by companies and individuals.

Previously, regional offices such as the one at Oshakati were reported to have not been meeting revenue collection targets owing to non-compliance by taxpayers.

Oshakati residents breathe a sigh of relief as there will be no tariff increase

Residents of Oshakati can breathe a sigh of relief as there will be no tariff increase for this financial year.

The announcement was made during the tabling of the council's 2023–2024 budget, amounting to N$214 million.

The council says it took note of the current global and local economic situation in the town.

Against this background, the council, he says, decided not to effect any tariff increase on water, sewerage, or refuse removal.

Coca-Cola's Oshakati branch employees stage demonstration against APS

Employees of Coca-Cola's Oshakati branch staged a demonstration in protest against Africa Personnel Service (APS), the biggest labor hire company in Namibia.

The employees in their petition claim that they have been receiving low wages since the company outsourced the employment of workers to APS in 2015.

In addition, the employees said they do not have fixed wages and are paid per hour on a 'no work, no pay' system.

Namibia's first secondary school of computing has opens at Oshakati

Namibia's first secondary school of computing has opened at Oshakati. The N$1,6 million school was donated by Rani Trading.

The school has four classrooms and a store room and there are currently 29 learners.

Speaking at the inauguration of the school, ICT Deputy Minister, Emma Theofelus said the Oshana Secondary School of computing is an indication of the urgency of the ICT needs in the country.

"We need to encourage leadership, give them the necessary ability to leverage all the opportunities that come with it."

Two brothers died in an earth dam at Eenhana

Two brothers died instantly this morning following a freak accident in an earth dam at Eenhana in the Ohangwena Region. 

Preliminary investigations revealed that the two were part of a group of four men whose motor vehicle, a Toyota Hilux, was being reversed to the edge of the earth dam for the occupants to draw water and fill containers for their brick-making business when the car flipped and fell into the dam, being submerged within minutes. 

Oshakati Carribean Recreational Facility inaugurated

The Minister of Industrialization and Trade has called on the Oshakati Town Council to set up a recreational park for children to bring them together and nurture them into becoming responsible adults.

Lucia Iipumbu made these remarks when she officially inaugurated the revamped Oshakati Caribbean Recreational Facility.

Oshakati Caribbean was once a popular recreational facility in the 1990s, but it has since fallen into a dilapidated state and could no longer be used by the public.

Oshana Governor disappointed at lack of attendance to Regional Validation workshop

Oshana Governor, Elia Irimari, is disappointed with the failure of some local authorities to attend the Regional Validation workshop on the Integrated Regional Land Use Plan held at Oshakati recently.

Irimari expressed disappointment during the opening of the Integrated Regional Land Use Plan Validation Workshop, which was organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform in conjunction with the Oshana Regional Council.

He particularly referred to the absence of the Ondangwa and Ongwediva town councils.
