Call to combine drought relief and feeding programmes in Tsumkwe

Tsumkwe Constituency Councillor Johannes Haufiku has called on the Office of the Prime Minister to combine the drought relief food aid and feeding programmes for marginalised communities in his area.

In an interview with nbc News, Haufiku says food parcels do not reach all intended beneficiaries, despite many households and individuals needing food aid.

According to Haufiku, households listed for the marginalised feeding programme receive food parcels quarterly but do not qualify for drought relief aid, which is distributed monthly through the constituency office. 

Staff shortages at GBV shelters a concern

Gender-based violence (GBV) shelters are faced with staff shortages, resulting in operational limitations.

In a ministerial statement, the Minister of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare, Doreen Sioka, addressed the issue regarding the operational status of government-funded shelters in the National Assembly.
Minister Sioka also emphasised the role of private shelters that are subsidised by the government in support of GBV survivors.

The Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare Minister, Doreen Sioka, says she is disturbed by incidences of gender-based violence in Namibia, despite the enactment of many laws to combat GBV.

She made these remarks during the commemoration of the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons at Oshikango in the Ohangwena Region.

Sioka particularly warned against killing women and children.

Day of the African Child celebrated at Ncamagoro Combined School

The Day of the African Child was celebrated at Ncamagoro Combined School under the theme "The Rights of the Child in the Digital Environment."

According to Internet World Statistics, as of 2021, Namibia had a total of 1 347 418 internet users with a 34 percent penetration rate.

Thomas Rengi, the Councillor of Ncamagoro Constituency, said while the internet offers incredible opportunities, it also exposes children to potential dangers.

Minister Sioka Hosts Christmas Party for People with Disabilities

The Minister of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare hosted a Christmas party for people with disabilities at Katima Mulilo.

Minister Sioka said she was humbled to share her time with people with disabilities.

"I'm grateful that you heard my request that we come and eat together, you are the ones I chose this year, I sat down, praying, praying, praying, asking whom am I going to choose this year, which place, so it came to my mind, and God said to me that there are those other people whom I'm abandoning, so it's you."

Minister Sioka calls for multi-sectoral approach to ending gender-based violence

The government has reiterated its call for a multi-sectoral approach to tackling Gender-Based Violence.

The Minister of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare, Doreen Sioka addressed a belated International Human Rights Day and Women's Day commemoration at Keetmanshoop. 

In a message delivered on her behalf by ||Kharas Governor, Aletha Frederick, Sioka paid tribute to Namibian women, who sacrificed their lives in resistance to forced removals from the Old Location to Katutura, by South African apartheid forces on 10 December 1959.
