ECD foundation receives focus

The Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture has resolved to focus on literacy and numeracy skills in the lower primary school phases to lay a strong foundation for tertiary education.

Deputy Minister Faustina Calley said this when she outlined the ministry's future plans during the President's media briefing on Monday.

Among the issues the ministry will focus on are infrastructure, literacy programmes, and digital learning.

The Director General of the National Planning Commission, Obeth Kandjoze, says substantive efforts are underway to revive and propel Vision 2030.

Kandjoze, who was speaking at the President's media briefing on Monday, acknowledged that significant setbacks, due to unmet obligations and challenges, are experienced to achieve the ambitious goals of Vision 2030.

The vision, conceived in 2004, aims to transform Namibia into a fully developed and industrialised nation, aligning with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and the Harambee Prosperity Plan.

Agriculture sectors contribution to GDP shows consistent growth

There is a revival in the agriculture sector, and its contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) has picked up and is showing consistent growth.

There are, however, some challenges remaining in the agricultural sector, namely the pricing of food owing to geopolitics.

The consumer price had increased sharply, but on the other hand, there was also a reduction in prices for producers.

President Geingob dissatisfied with SACU

President Hage Geingob is concerned about the future of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), as it appears to be at a standstill with tariffs affecting development.

Dr. Geingob pointed out that Namibia is like a beggar, something that has to be earnestly discussed.

Dr. Geingob also raised concern about the announcement of new BRICS members, which was done without formally spelling out the requirements.

Namibia is expected to earn between N$60 and N$95 billion in taxes per year, in addition to royalties from its estimated 6,5 billion barrels of oil.

The contribution to the country's gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to increase by more than N$600 million, thanks to the envisaged oil industry, by the year 2040.
