The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (nbc) has launched the Molelo Radio Drama Project, a new venture that promises to be a game changer in the country's entertainment economy.

The project was launched by the national broadcaster's Director General Stanley Similo in Windhoek.

The project received an overwhelming response to its call for proposals from the public for radio dramas in various languages.

The Molelo Radio Drama Project was initiated by the nbc to promote Namibian cultural diversity and art through local dramas in all languages.

The project is a response to the public's call for intensified localized content in all sectors that involve public funding.

It is also an opportunity for artists to venture into promoting their careers and a way to preserve Namibia's cultures and oral traditions.

nbc DG Stanley Similo said the public is looking forward to entertainment in all aspects of life, and before there was television, there was radio.

The selected story concepts will be developed into a 26-episode series of 15 minutes each for airing on the nbc radio platforms.

Genres include crime, comedy, action/adventure, and romance.

Aspiring radio drama producers had to submit their proposals for radio dramas in Afrikaans, English, German, Khoehoegowab (Damara/Nama), Oshiwambo, Otjiherero, Rukavango, San, Setswana, and Silozi.

The Molelo Radio Drama Project is a major development for the country's entertainment economy and a relief to scriptwriters and broadcasters whose careers have been in a dilemma due to a lack of market.

Similo says the project is also a positive, unifying exercise that can generate income for the basic needs of the youth in all 14 regions.

The nbc's Molelo Radio Drama Project promises to be a major hit, and depending on how the journey goes, they may have to bring more drama programs on board.

The project is a clear indication of the nbc's commitment to informing, educating, and entertaining the public while preserving the country's cultures and oral traditions.
