The murder suspect in the death of Auguste Ndemupanda Jonas, 31-year-old Prostatius Kuuvilwa, has been remanded in custody.

Kuuvila, who is accused of murdering his 28-year-old ex-girlfriend, appeared in the Otjiwarongo Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Kuuvilwa allegedly stabbed Jonas nine times during a quarrel at her house at Telecom Informal Settlement over the weekend.

Relatives informed the nbc News team that Kuuvilwa and Jonas ended their relationship last month because of misunderstandings.

"Jonas was advised by the uncle's mother that they must resolve the problem at home and then reconcile."

She said the couple eventually broke up in January but reconciled only to end it again last month.

"I was at the neighbor's house, where he dropped off the keys and said he was going to Jonas and would be back later."

"What followed next was news of the death of the 28-year-old," she narrated.

Jonas' aunt, Anna Haiduwa, says she's unaware of the happenings in their relationship, except that they are no longer cohabiting.

Otjiwarongo Councilor Marlene Mbakera has implored people in relationships to seek help the minute they are troubled.

"I really like to urge our ladies, women, even men, whoever is in an abusive relationship, to report the abuse, talk to someone that you really trust, and report the cases of abuse. I would also really like to ask the Namibian Police to make the process of restraining orders easier and to train the community about how they can get restraining orders to protect themselves against abuse. I've realized the process of restraining orders is sometimes cumbersome."

Jonas had two minor children from a previous relationship.

Kuuvilwa appeared before Magistrate Peingonjabi Shihepo, where he indicated he would be applying for legal aid representation.

The case has been postponed until June 27 of this year.
