A group of generational farm workers of the Amseb Family has been evicted from the private farm Yellowbank, in the Gobabis Constituency of Omaheke Region, which belonged to the late Rudolf Liebenberg.
The group was at one point allowed to stay temporarily at Farm Yellowbank after the constituency office and traditional leaders intervened.
The family says they have lived on the farm for more than 40 years, as they spent six days outside in the corridor to the farm with their livestock, waiting for the government to relocate them.
Amseb family member Hendrik Ganeb tells nbc News that the farm was sold to the government last year, and they had hoped to be the first to be considered for resettlement.
"After hearing that the farm is bought by the government, the impression was as generational farm workers. The act, which has been amended in parliament, says that when the farm is advertised, we shall apply under generational farm workers as they have been here for years. This is ancestral land as their forefathers have been buried here, and that is their wish because there is nowhere to go. This is the only place called home. So they are appealing to the government to be resettled here."
The family then engaged the relevant authorities on the issue, appealing to remain on the farm and be considered once the process is complete.
Constituency Councilor Augustinus Tebele called on affected members to remain calm during this time as negotiations are underway to ensure that the family remains at Farm Yellowbank.
"Now, as I'm speaking to you, the remedy to the situation is that we manage to speak to the office of the Governor, Chairperson, then the division dealing with resettlement, which is land. We managed to discuss this issue and came to a conclusion where I was asked to collect all of these generational farm workers and bring them to the land office so that they can be asked how many animals they have to establish how many they have left at this farm. Now as I'm speaking to you now, they got back to the farm, and put the animals back—not their houses but their animals—because of frustration."
