Easter weekend went by in relative peace and quiet in the |Khomas Region, with police reporting a decline in criminal activity compared to what is normally the case over the holidays.
The Namibian Police's Commander in |Khomas, Commissioner David Indongo commended residents for their good behaviour over the long weekend, describing the holidays as calm.
The nbc News team caught up with Commissioner Indongo at the Okapuka police checkpoint between Okahandja and Windhoek.
The four-day Easter weekend is normally marred by a spate of violent crimes, including sexual assaults and armed robberies and road accidents.
But NamPol's regional head, Commisioner David Indongo says the past Christian Holiday went by in relative quiet, a sign of maturity among inhabitants of the region.
Over the just concluded holiday, police reported three motor vehicle accidents, in which two people were killed, including pedestrians.
The Police traffic unit and the Windhoek City Police also doubled their visibility over the weekend.
190 summonses were subsequently issued to drivers who were found to be driving beyond the legal speed limit, and those who were found to be driving while under the influence of alcohol.
"Other crimes in general, we recorded about 7 deaths, three of them being suicides, thus we continue to encourage our people who are having possible multiple problems not to keep problems to themselves."
Additionally, two cases of culpable homicides and 28 house break-ins were reported.
And Indongo urges homeowners to be cautious.
"Some of the houses were either found not locked, or owners were at the drinking places and their keys were stolen, people know their houses, they loaded everything."
At the time of nbc's visit to the Okapuka police checkpoint at noon on Monday, the movement of traffic was just picking up.
Four drivers were issued fines after violating various road rules.
The regional commander called on road users to be vigilant and respect traffic laws.
"We have enough manpower to ensure that all cars are screened and allowed to proceed just to avoid long lines, what we are urging from them is to cooperate, not only at the checkpoint but also at the sporadic checkpoints."
