Three of the four northern regions are preparing for another possible severe drought due to poor rainfall.

It is against that background that the Regional Governors of Oshana, Omusati and Oshikoto along with other stakeholders, assessed water levels in the Etaka- Uuvudhiya water canal.

The rainy season is rounding up and some areas are still dry including most of the Oshanas. This situation poses a serious threat to water availability and scarce grazing for animals.

The Etaka- Uuvudhiya water canal, which is in a dilapidated state was last used 14 years ago during the drought.

The total cost that went into the rehabilitation of the canal stands at N$7 million.

Omusati Governor Erginus Endjala says, the imminent drought has forced them to consider the option of pumping in water for both human and animal consumption. The Oshikoto Governor says, his region is severely affected by the shortage of water and if the canal is not excavated residents will lose their livestock.

Governor of Oshikoto Region Penda ya Ndakolo reavealed that once the water reaches the area of Uuvudhiya constituency in the Oshana region where the regions meet, cattle herders who graze in that area will benefit.

The councils will compile a report that will forwarded the Office of the Prime Minister for planning and crafting of targeted interventions.

The revival of the over 100 km long canal will need all hands on deck, and locals are encouraged to assist when the time comes to aid those that are severely affected.
