An 83-year-old resident of Kazauli Village in the Katima Rural Constituency was left homeless after her house was gutted by fire.

The fire, which was started by one of her grandchildren, spread through the house and caught on the clothes.

The child then ran out of the house.

The senior citizen and her son were seated under a tree outside the courtyard when the incident happened.

Silinda Matomola told nbc News that his mother lost all her belongings in the fire.

Matomola saw smoke from the courtyard and thought it was coming from the cooking area.

However, he says it was too late by the time he realized it was serious and immediately informed his mother.

"All her belongings got burned, including dishes, pots, blankets, money, children's clothes, and school books."

The fire destroyed maize and pumpkins that were harvested and stored in the courtyard.

The family has appealed to the constituency councillor to assist the old woman, who is left destitute.
