The Day of the African Child was celebrated at Ncamagoro Combined School under the theme "The Rights of the Child in the Digital Environment."
According to Internet World Statistics, as of 2021, Namibia had a total of 1 347 418 internet users with a 34 percent penetration rate.
Thomas Rengi, the Councillor of Ncamagoro Constituency, said while the internet offers incredible opportunities, it also exposes children to potential dangers.
Rengi delivered the Minister of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication, and Social Welfare, Doreen Sioka's statement.
"With dangers such as cyberbullying, online grooming, and exposure to inappropriate content, it is our duty to create a protective shield around our children, ensuring their safety online. To achieve this, we need to promote digital literacy and education for children, parents, and educators alike. Schools should integrate digital literacy into their curriculum, teaching children about online safety, privacy, and critical thinking."
The Director of Education in the Kavango West Region, Pontianus Musore, called on parents to groom disciplined children.
"Our message to the parents and carers is, please take your responsibility seriously. Parents are the first teachers; you are the first teachers before we take over as teachers employed by the Ministry. There are some things that need to be taught by parents, for example, the discipline of our children. We need our parents to support us so that our children can realise their dreams."
The programme, which had drama performances and poems related to the Day of the African Child, was directed by the learners.
