Namibia and Serbia are looking at promoting cooperation in defence as well as organising a Joint Defence Committee.

This, according to the Serbian Ambassador to Namibia, Miloš Perišić, will allow Namibia's armed forces to be trained by the Serbian Defence Academy through scholarships.

The Ambassador, who is based in Luanda, paid a courtesy visit to Vice President Nangolo Mbumba.

Serbia is known to be one of the best producers of ammunition and equipment for military maintenance in its region.

Defence is an area Serbia and Namibia are aiming to explore and cooperate in.

The Serbian delegation has already met with Namibian Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister Frans Kapofi to discuss matters of defence capacity building.

With a proposed Joint Defence Committee, Namibia will be presented with the opportunity to be trained by the Serbian Military School.

"Because as Eastern Europe, our defence industry is compatible with both Eastern standards, Russian standards, and NATO standards, so we are producing ammunition for both standards, and we have the capacity to maintain and upgrade equipment for Russian, western, and Eastern technologies. Many countries from all over the world are sending people, even from the States, Germany, and African countries. We have a good military school, and we hope to receive your people soon," said Perišić.

Discussions also touched on other areas to be explored for possible cooperation, including health, education, IT, and agriculture.

Vice President Mbumba expressed willingness to cooperate, especially in the education sector, as Namibia has already signed various agreements with international Institutions in Serbia.

Mbumba particularly emphasised Namibia's benefit from Serbia's educational and military training.

Defence, he says, is imperative and requires highly trained personnel who understand the history, geography, and new equipment needed to protect their own country.
