In a step towards promoting demographic diversity in the Namibian Judiciary, Lady Justice Rita Tambudzai Makarau was sworn in today as an Acting Judge of the Supreme Court.

The ceremony, held at the Supreme Court in Windhoek, was attended by members of the legal fraternity and dignitaries.

Chief Justice Peter Shivute emphasised the importance of a judiciary that reflects the diverse makeup of the nation and highlighted the concrete steps taken to increase female representation on the Supreme Court Bench.

Just three weeks ago, the Judiciary welcomed Lady Justice Hannelie Prinsloo and Lady Justice Esi Schimming-Chase as Acting Judges of the Supreme Court.

Lady Justice Makarau, hailing from Zimbabwe, joins this group.

Currently serving as a Judge of the Constitutional Court in Zimbabwe, Lady Justice Makarau, Shivute says, brings a wealth of judicial experience to her new role.

Chief Justice Shivute acknowledged the historical practise of sourcing judicial expertise from neighbouring countries and beyond, citing the enrichment of jurisprudence and the enhancement of the courts' work through the inclusion of experienced judicial officers.

He expressed confidence that Lady Justice Makarau's service on the Bench would yield similar positive results, further elevating the Namibian judiciary's standard.

The ceremony marked a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to enhance gender diversity and expertise within Namibia's judiciary.

Lady Justice Makarau's appointment is expected to add further impetus to the pursuit of justice and upholding the rule of law in Namibia, as in an ideal constitutional democracy, judges are expected to contribute significantly to the Supreme Court's work, ensuring the fair and impartial administration of justice.
