Kalahari Constituency Councillor, Ignatius Kariseb has called on the crop farming communities to come up with sustainable agricultural methods in order to unlock the full potential of the sector.
Kariseb made this remark during the 7th Omaheke Crop Farmers Day held at Blouberg Settlement in the Kalahari Constituency.
Kariseb emphasised that food security in the region is a key aspect of addressing malnutrition in the region.
Kariseb also implored the crop-farming communities to capitalise on Farmers Day to share relevant information about the agricultural sector.
"As farmers, we can make a positive difference by adopting sustainable farming techniques such as essential agriculture, organic farming, conservation agriculture, and agroforestry. We can overcome these challenges and pave the way for a prosperous future."
The Chief Agricultural Scientific Officer, Dr. Jorry Kaurivi, acknowledged the effort and dedication shown by crop farmers in the region despite challenges.
"We have the ministry that has endorsed the dry land crop production programme, which we call DCPP, to be established and spread in the Omaheke Region only when it is above the red line. Now we need political will if we are to produce massively. Is there any party that can take up what we are producing and consuming?"
Farmers also discussed marketing strategies and unfavourable weather patterns, among other challenges facing the crop farming community.
The 7th Omaheke Crop Farmers Day was held under the theme 'Diversification of Farming Systems for Food and Nutritional Wealth'.
