The private and public sectors are urged to play their roles if Namibia is to reach the Nationally Determined Contributions to reduce carbon emissions by 89% to 91% by 2030.
As per the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, Namibia has committed to fulfilling its obligations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
In its 2015 and 2021 reports, Namibia acknowledged that it has limitations and lacks adequate capacity to properly account for the effects of its mitigating and adaptive measures.
It is against this background that Namibia is partnering with the African Technology and Policy Studies Network to take advantage of the tools and indexes it has created to track progress towards achieving the Nationally Determined Contribution to Climate Change.
The National Coordinator for the African Technology Policy Studies Network, Uzochukwu Okafor, says the workshop aims to find ways the country can successfully achieve its targets.
Namibia, like other countries, has made commitments to mitigating and adapting to climate change. For example, Namibia committed to releasing carbon emissions from 89% to 91%. Because of that commitment, we need to be reporting regularly to see whether there is progress to be made. To do that, we need to make use of what we call tracking tools and indexes."
The tracking system and index to gauge the status of NDC implementation in sub-Saharan African countries were developed by the African Technology and Policy Studies Network in 2019.
The monitoring tools and indexes are based on five indicators: governance, mitigation, adaptation, and funding, among others.
