Taxi drivers in the Kavango East Region want the Namibia Public Passenger Transport Association (NPPTA) to stop operating in the region.

They held a demonstration in Rundu, claiming the NPPTA office collects charges from them, but they do not see what the money is used for.

The demonstration was prompted by what they deemed to be excessive fees for a driver's registration certificate and the N$360 fee for a yellow sticker that is paid at the NPPTA regional headquarters.

The taxi drivers further assert that they must fork up N$20 each month in contribution fees, N$350 for membership, and N$400 for the large taxi number.

In total, the taxi drivers claim that they pay N$1400 annually to NPPTA, and with N$550 registered taxi drivers in the region, they want to know what the NPPTA office is doing for them.

The taxi drivers demand the removal of NPPTA and request that Rundu town council take over the duties.

On Monday, the taxis only started operating after 12:00 following the demonstration.

The disgruntled taxi drivers handed over petitions to the NPPTA office, the governor's office, and the town council.
