The Masubia Traditional Authority in the Zambezi Region held a demonstration to denounce calls for secessionism in the region.

In a petition addressed to the Zambezi Governor, Masubia Traditional Authority demonstrators outlined that they are not part of what they termed the unconstitutional, hostile, and aggressive activities of those promoting the breakaway of the region from the rest of Namibia.

Masubia Traditional Authority Councillor Richwell Kasale, who read the petition, emphasised that secessionist ideas put a blot on the shining democracy of Namibia.

Kasale observed that Namibians in all parts of the country have been enjoying freedom, peace, and tranquillity for over 30 years; hence, there is no reason to follow leaders who have resorted to tribal and regional politics.

"Please, Honourable Governor, convey our assurance to the Government of the Republic of Namibia that we remain loyal citizens of this country. We still remember that Mr. Mishake Muyongo was one of the founders and signatories to the constitution of this country, which clearly states that Namibia is a unitary state in terms of the Namibian Constitution, Chapter 1 (1). This means that trying to secede part of it is a crime, and we therefore have no reason to pay attention to his followers who are preaching the message of secessionism. We should only focus our attention on developmental agendas for the well-being of our region and the entire nation of Namibia."

This is not the first time traditional authorities in the Zambezi Region have come out against talks of secession propagated by some in the region.

All four traditional authorities of Masubia, Mafwe, Mayeyi, and Mashi cautioned their people against listening to those who still harbour ideas of seceding the region from the rest of Namibia.
