The objective of the International Association for Spelling as Communication (I-ASC) is to popularise the use of spelling as a means of communication, particularly for people who cannot use speech as a reliable form of communication.

The organisation strives to ensure global access to effective communication for people with communication inabilities.

The event "Spelling to Communicate" is an introduction to the communication method for people with motor speech disorder who cannot speak despite being able to hear.

Elizabeth Vossellor, Executive Director of the International Association for Spelling as Communication (I-ASC), says spelling to communicate is a communication system.

'' We usually refer to it as alternative and augmentative communication, and this particular one uses letterboards to get the conversation and speech aspects out of the motor to put them into the gros-motor.  ''

This communication method aims to empower non-speaking individuals by providing them with a reliable means of expressing themselves and engaging in effective communication by using letter boards.

Vosseller encouraged more people to come on board, especially those who have teaching qualifications, in order to become practitioners.

''I would love for the people in Namibia to consider practice and training. It's great for some people who have sort of a background in education, speech therapy, occupational therapy, or music therapy, but we do have some people who change careers to do this, and they should reach out to i-asc.org to get more information.''

She further encouraged parents who have children living with disabilities to not lose hope.

''Hope is tricky because that is your most precious commodity, and it is hard to hope that maybe there is more for your kid but to believe that there is that potential that even if they cannot talk, they have been listening and understanding their whole lives, so don't give up.''

By hosting this event, I-ASC and its partners aim to raise awareness about the importance of spelling as a communication tool and provide individuals with the opportunity to learn more about this method and its potential benefits.
